AI Visibility: How to Get Recommended by AI, Not Just Ranked by Google

Google ranks pages. AI recommends brands. This is the guide to being the one it names.

Search didn’t get an update. It changed jobs. The question is no longer where do you rank, it’s does the machine say your name when a buyer asks? Everything on this page is here to help you answer yes.

Building in public

From ranking,
to answers,
to recommendation

For twenty years, visibility meant one thing: rank on page one and earn the click. That game still exists. It’s just no longer the one that decides who gets chosen.

The ground moved in three steps:

  • SEO got you ranked — a slot on a list of ten blue links.
  • AEO got you into the answer — the featured snippet, the AI Overview, the box above the results.
  • GEO gets you recommended — named, by name, inside the single answer an AI hands back when someone asks for the best option in your category.

Rankings are a list you compete on. Recommendation is a shortlist the machine builds about you, out of everything the web says. Those are not the same skill, and treating them as one is why brands that dominate Google can vanish the moment a buyer opens ChatGPT.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI platforms — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude — mention and recommend your brand when someone asks a question in your category.

It has three moving parts:

  • Retrieval — can the AI find and read information about you at all?
  • Citation — when it does, does it treat you as a source worth pulling from?
  • Recommendation — when it narrows the field to a few brands, are you one of the names?

Traditional SEO measures your page’s position. AI visibility measures your brand’s presence inside an answer someone actually reads. You can have the first and none of the second — most brands do, and most have never checked.

The Method

How we do it: the FAN Framework

Getting recommended isn’t luck, and it isn’t “post more.” It’s a repeatable process. Ours is the FAN Framework — the method behind every audit, every article, and every brand we’ve moved into AI answers:

  • F — Fan-out Mapping: the real questions buyers ask AI on the way to a decision, not just the keywords they type into Google.
  • A — Authority Signals: the third-party evidence AI needs before it will vouch for you — because it won’t take your own word for it.
  • N — Node Architecture: structuring your content and entity so AI can find you, understand you, and trust you as a source.

FAQ — frequently asked

AI visibility, answered

Is GEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO optimises your page to rank on a list. GEO optimises your brand to be recommended inside an AI answer. Most GEO work happens off your own website, in the sources AI trusts.

Does my brand actually need AI visibility?

If your buyers ask AI tools for recommendations before they talk to you — and a growing majority now do — then yes. If you’re not in the answer, you’re not in the consideration set.

Can I rank #1 on Google and still be invisible in AI answers?

Yes, and it’s common. Google and AI engines reward different signals: Google rewards the authority of your own page; AI rewards agreement across independent sources. Strong SEO doesn’t automatically carry over.

How do I check whether AI recommends my brand?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode the question a buyer would ask — “best [your category] for [your customer]” — and note whether you’re named, mentioned, or absent. That’s your real starting line.

How is AI visibility measured?

Not by rankings. By recommendation rate, share of voice across engines, and accuracy — whether the AI names you, how often, and whether it gets your details right.

How long does it take to become AI-visible?

It depends on how much the web already says about you. Because it’s built on third-party evidence and consensus, GEO compounds — slower to start than flipping a title tag, far more durable once it holds.
